Sea Bass, White
Sea Bass, White: This was an unusual day for spearfishing of the beach. I went freediving off the Headlands in Dana Point speargun in hand. Typically, visibility is not very good, water is cold, and game fish are hard to find. Not this day. It was crystal clear, warm water and sunny skies, with bait everywhere. Usually, I have to hunt down a lone White Seabass (WSB) cruising around the kelp looking for prey. Most of the time, none are to be found anywhere. Sometimes, it takes hours to have any luck. This day, I dove down and within 10 minutes I had the first fish. It took me about 45 minutes to breath hold and dive down and cut the WSB out of the kelp (my gun has a reel and WSB typically head to the bottom and wrap up around the kelp). Within a few minutes after reloading my gun, a school of WSB came cruising by me but they were just out of range. Suddenly, one took off after some bait and I shot him as he swam underneath me. It was a great day….with plenty of fish for the BBQ and to give to friends.. Dana Hogan's fishing photos. © SportfishWorld
