We went out today for the first time in a long while - just for a spin out to the islands with an arsonal of lures. We headed to the west side of the islands to look for some reef to troll over. We found some nice looking stuff and did zigzags throughout the day there.

The current was pretty bad and the visibility wasn’t the best so we made the most of the sounder. We were getting smashed quite frequently which is one of the reasons why I like lure fishing so much - it keeps you on your toes!

The lures of the day were Halco Scorpions in all depths and 125-150 sizes, small enough to flick with the bait casters yet tough enough not to let you down.

It was hard to keep the hundreds of Cod at bay to try and get to the Trout and usually if the Cod didn't grab ya lures a Flag would instead. Rather annoying but with a change of tactics some other species came into play.

We would have caught and released approximately 50 fish between the two of us on lures for the day. The majority of them were Cod but we also got about 10 or so little shark mackerel and a few little Spaniards to add to the enjoyment. We even got a small Tuskfish on a lure and a few Trigger fish as well!

Late in the arvo we caught 2 Cobia (one each) just before we went home. It was a good day lure fishing. Cheers ...Luke Groen
